Rosa was a beautiful soul. Someone should be there to honor her.

Izzy about Rosa, What Lies Beneath

Rosa Santiago was Raphael Santiago's younger sister and his last living relative.[1][2]

Biography

History

When Rosa and her family first moved to the States from Mexico, she became incredibly homesick, and no one but her older brother Raphael noticed. To try to ease her sadness, Raphael would sometimes accompany Rosa to their roof to look at the stars. It had been something that stuck with Rosa for a long time.

At one point, Raphael, who had become a vampire and stopped aging, had to leave them. Rosa had been devastated, especially since she had no memory of Raphael saying goodbye to her.[2]

When she became elderly and developed dementia, often forgetting people's names, even her family's, Rosa was moved into a Catholic retirement home in Harlem. Despite having forgotten him, Rosa received constant visits from Raphael; he would even drop off meals for her every Sunday.[1]

Rosa: "But then he ran away. He never said goodbye."
Raphael: "No, he did! Remember? The night he left, he snuck into your room and gave you one last hug."
Rosa: "I don't remember."
Raphael: "Oh, no. He... he did! He did. He couldn't say why. And it broke his heart to leave. And he promised you if you ever felt lonely, all you had to do was look up at those stars... and know that your big brother was out there, thinking of you."
―Raphael's last conversation with Rosa, What Lies Beneath

Once, Raphael visited her with Isabelle Lightwood. Isabelle later visited her with Simon Lewis and took a photo of them, as her way of helping Simon get Raphael off his back, which backfired as the visit and photo only enraged him. Rosa noted that Isabelle and Simon looked good together, and when they denied being together, she told her that Simon was a catch.[3]

Shortly after, Raphael found out that Rosa's condition was getting worse.[4] Raphael visited her one day, during which a very happy Rosa told him that he was her favorite worker at the nursing home, but Raphael told her that he was just a friend; either way, Rosa was having fun. She noted that he reminded her of her big brother, and Raphael had to remind her about his name. They talked about their family and their precious moments, but the two got emotional when they discussed the time when Raphael had run away.

Raphael got a call shortly after that she had passed away. When he told Isabelle, she came to console him and, upon finding out that her funeral was in the day, meaning Raphael would be unable to attend, she promised to go to be able to honor Rosa.[2]
