–Robert reminding Isabelle and Alec, Blood Calls To Blood

Robert Lightwood is the father of Alec, Isabelle, and Max Lightwood and the adoptive father of Jace Herondale. He used to run the New York Institute with his wife, Maryse.

Biography[]

Early life[]

In their youth, Robert and Maryse had been members of Valentine Morgenstern's notorious Circle,[1] recruited by Maryse.[2] Just before the Uprising, they made a deal with the Clave. They were pardoned for their cooperation, and his Circle rune was not cursed.[3]

At one point, while he and Maryse were in Barcelona, he proposed to her, and the pair eventually wed and had three children together.[4]

Robert and Maryse eventually became the heads of the Institute in New York City. At one point, Robert had an extramarital affair. Isabelle, whom he was close to, overheard one of his phone conversations with his mistress. Isabelle wanted to tell Maryse but feared overstepping and so kept the knowledge to herself.[5]

Valentine's return[]

In 2016, because of recent unforeseen events during their brief absence from the Institute, and due to their past connection to Valentine, the Lightwoods lost control of the Institute, with the Clave deciding to hand full control over the the envoy they sent, Lydia Branwell.[1]

Shortly after Jace left with Valentine, he returned to Idris.[6]

Stay in Idris[]

In the weeks after Valentine took off with the Mortal Cup, Robert, no longer tied to his responsibilities as head of the New York Institute, remained in Idris. When he was joined by his wife, Maryse, and their youngest son, Max, Maryse found out that Robert was cheating on her. The pair constantly bickered—something that did not go unnoticed by their son.[4]

He and Maryse eventually planned to finalize their divorce. Meanwhile, the investigation on the former Circle members was reopened following the revelation that their former Consul, Malachi, was a traitor. Instead of a severe punishment, Robert received a plea deal and was assigned to the Institute in Los Angeles.[2] He had been allowed to bring Max,[7] and he kept Maryse updated about their son.[8]
