Raising Hell is the fourth episode of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments.

Synopsis[]

MAGNUS BANE COULD BE THE KEY TO ALL OF THE ANSWERS: The Shadowhunters will have to put their trust in a Downworlder to access Clary's memories.

After getting a clue about who may have wiped Clary's memories, the crew hunts down the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Magnus Bane. With all of the warlocks in hiding from Valentine, the team must lure Magnus out with something he can't refuse - a killer party and something very valuable. But with emotions running high, more may come out of their meeting with Magnus than just the retrieval of Clary's memories.

Meanwhile, Simon doesn't seem to be himself after his recent Downworlder encounter.

Plot[]

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Simon mentions that he overheard Camille discussing Magnus Bane, giving Clary a solid lead on the warlock that removed her memories. Frustrated that Clary only sees him as a friend, Simon starts hallucinating Camille and vampire-related imagery. Going against Clary and the Shadowhunters' advice, he leaves the Institute. At home, Maureen confesses her feelings for him, and he develops a strange fixation with blood. Feeling increasingly uneasy about what's happening to him, Simon returns to the Hotel DuMort.

Meanwhile, Valentine discovers Seelie scouts running reconnaisance in his base, and kills them. Alaric, Luke's colleague, cautions him to be careful not to lose his job as a police officer.

The Shadowhunters arrange a meeting with Magnus at a Downworlder rave. Magnus reveals he has fed Clary's memories to a demon and therefore cannot personally restore them to her. He flees when Valentine sends an assassin after him, but leaves behind a way for the Shadowhunters to track him. Jace and Alec use their parabatai bond to locate Magnus' lair, where the Shadowhunters fight off invading Circle members. Magnus takes a special interest in Alec.

Clary has Magnus summon the demon that ate her memories, and in exchange for returning them, it demands each from Magnus, Clary, Jace, Izzy, and Alec one memory of the one they love the most. When Alec sees that his treasured memory is of Jace (heavily implying he is attracted to his adopted brother), he panics and disrupts the ritual, putting Jace in mortal danger. Clary opts to slay the demon, saving Jace, but losing any chance of restoring her memory.

Later, Clary uses her necklace to see her mother again, but this time Valentine talks to her directly, demanding the Mortal Cup.
