Of Men and Angels is the sixth episode of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments.
Synopsis[]
CLARY LEARNS THE TRUTH ABOUT HER PAST: Magnus and Luke reveal Clary's past. Meanwhile, Isabelle and Alec are tasked to restore their family name in the eyes of the Clave.
With Luke in dire need of help, Jace, Clary and Simon take him to Magnus' lair in hopes of saving his life. Once there, the story of how Valentine came to be evil, and Jocelyn and Luke's past is revealed to Clary in hopes of triggering her memory of what happened to The Mortal Cup.
Plot[]
Suffering from his fight, Luke has a vision of Jocelyn asking him to tell Clary what she needs to know in order to recover the Mortal Cup and stop Valentine. Clary and Simon take him to Magnus Bane for treatment. While procuring reagents to treat Luke, Jace and Simon chafe over their affections for Clary.
Izzy reports that the Seelies are unwilling to cooperate any further with the Clave, and Maryse reacts dismissively. The Lightwood patriarch Robert and his son Max arrive at the Institute. Alec's, Jace's, and Izzy's recent unsanctioned missions have tarnished the Lightwood name in the Clave's eyes, prompting their parents to arrange a marriage for Alec and have Izzy play the role of Shadowhunter ambassador to the Seelies. Alec, who feels he is more suited to diplomacy, is unhappy over this. Izzy tries to get her parents to swap their plans for her and Alec, but is told by Maryse that her passion makes her unsuited for an arranged marriage. Izzy responds by calling off her and Meliorn's relationship and trying to adopt a more professional persona.
Despite his reluctance to interfere in the Downworld, Alec responds to Jace's request to help Magnus heal Luke. Jace and Simon retrieve the ingredients to treat Luke, and his condition stabilizes. Alec reconciles with Jace. Feeling unneeded, Simon leaves Magnus' place. Magnus tells Alec that he interests him.
Luke and Magnus fill Clary in on her parents' backgrounds. Long before the Circle, the two of them swore to defend the Downworld and promote peace and virtue. However, Valentine slowly came to see those demonic blood as unclean, including Downworlders with demonic heritage like warlocks. Valentine experimented with Downworlder blood to augment his abilities, further damaging his sanity. Suspecting Luke, his parabatai, of having an affair with Jocelyn, Valentine tricked Luke into entering a werewolf den alone. Luke survived, but was turned from a Shadowhunter into a werewolf. Valentine convinced the Clave that his mass killing of Downworlders was justified, eventually leading to the Uprising, a bloody revolt in which he attempted to steal the Mortal Cup. However, thanks to Luke and Jocelyn's efforts, the latter was able to escape with the cup. Jocelyn eventually had her and Valentine's child, Clary, causing her to give up being a Shadowhunter.
Still not remembering the location of the cup, Clary shows Luke the box marked "JC" that she recovered from her apartment. Luke explains that "JC" stands for Jonathan Christopher, Clary's older brother who died in a fire set by Valentine. Clary spontaneously uses an innate ability to transform objects into drawings and vice versa. Realizing her mother had the same power, Clary deduces where the cup is being hidden.Credits[]
