Morning Star is the thirteenth and final episode of the first season of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments.

Synopsis[]

THE HUNT IS ON: Time is running out for the Shadowhunters to stop Valentine.

Jace, who is still reeling from everything that has happened, makes hunting down Valentine his number one priority even though he continues to wrestle with his conflicted feelings. In hopes of finding a way to stop Valentine before it is too late, Clary and Simon must find the key to unlocking Jocelyn's coma. But that key to unlocking Jocelyn's spell may just undo the Downworlder peace treaty, Simon's relationship with Raphael, and the vampire clan in the process.

Meanwhile, Alec must deal with the aftermath of his decision and what his choice means for his future.

Plot[]

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Clary shows Jace their mother's box marked "J.C." to prove that Jocelyn didn't willingly abandon him. Desperate to know more about his birth, Jace works with Clary to find the cure for Jocelyn's enchanted sleep. Their next lead, Camille, is entombed in the Hotel DuMort, and Simon, Clary, and Izzy launch a heist to free her. In exchange for the cure, Camille demands a signed document stating Simon's wilful transformation into a vampire, thus exonerating her of her violation of the Accords.

Maryse is furious with Alec for making his feelings for Magnus known to the entire Institute, and Robert warns him that Magnus is known to be a philanderer. Hodge's assault on Lydia and his plot to smuggle the Mortal Cup out of the Institute are discovered. He delivers it to Valentine, who sets about creating an army of Shadowhunters under his command. Hodge is barred from joining forces with Valentine again, and is forced to go on the run. Jace's emotional turmoil brings out his ruthless side, and he finds and tortures Hodge to reveal Valentine's whereabouts. Hodge is later taken in by the Institute.

Camille takes them to a private library and has Simon sign her document, but reveals that it was Dot who hid the cure in the library, and Camille doesn't know where it is. Valentine ambushes the heroes after they find the cure and Jace shows up to help, only to succumb to his father's suggestion that both of them are more alike than he realizes. In exchange for letting his friends go safely, Jace defects to Valentine's side.

At the Institute, Magnus uses the cure to wake Jocelyn.
