Malec is the twelfth episode of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments.
Synopsis[]
"ALL YOU NEED IS MALEC": On the eve of Alec and Lydia's wedding, relationships are examined.
The Institute is in full swing as everyone is preparing for the wedding of Alec and Lydia. Lydia is getting final touches made on her wedding dress, the wedding decorations are set and Isabelle is trying to figure out a way to throw a traditional, mundane bachelor party for her brother–whether he likes it or not. During what should be a time of great celebration for many is far from it as they examine their relationships. Alec is struggling on two sides–his wedding is one of the biggest days in his life and his parabatai should be at his side, yet he and Jace are still at odds. Alec also continues to struggle with his feelings for Magnus, especially when Magnus won't give up on Alec. And as the Institute is buzzing with romance, Clary is desperate to work things out with Jace, but he is keeping her at arm's length.
Meanwhile, Jace, Clary and Magnus go looking for warlock Ragnor Fell to try and find the antidote to awaken Jocelyn.
Plot[]
Clary, Jace, and Magnus identify the warlock, Ragnor Fell, who gave Jocelyn the potion that put her into an enchanted sleep, and visit his residence to find him, only for him to be killed before he can give the heroes the potion's antidote. Looking through Ragnor's personal effects, Magnus identifies Camille Belcourt as their next lead.
Izzy sets Jace and Alec up to reconcile before the latter's wedding. An apparition of Ragnor encourages Magnus to win Alec back, and Magnus' appearance at Alec and Lydia's wedding causes Alec to rethink the marriage. With Lydia's blessing, Alec calls the wedding off, kissing Magnus in front of the entire congregation. Robert and Maryse are respectively bewildered and furious to learn of Alec's feelings for a Downworlder.
Lydia intends to return to Idris to resume her work, but is attacked by Hodge Starkweather while retrieving the Mortal Cup from storage. Hodge strikes a deal with Valentine: if Valentine removes the rune that causes him excruciating pain for discussing the Circle, he will bring Valentine the cup.Credits[]

- The episode title "Malec" is the portmanteau or 'ship name' for the coupled pairing of Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood.
- Because Constantin Film does not own the rights to The Bane Chronicles, the mention of Imasu was technically not allowed.[2]
The following are elements adapted from The Mortal Instruments:
- Imasu Morales, his history with Magnus and his charango-playing is mentioned in this episode.
- Tessa Gray and Catarina Loss make cameos in this episode, as their images are portrayed alongside Ragnor's as two of the three possible candidates who made the potion for Jocelyn.
- After this episode, Clary's ability to transform objects into images and vice-versa is never brought up or used again.
