Lanaia was a Seelie and a loyal servant to the Seelie Queen.

Biography[]

Serving Jonathan[]

Lanaia is a Seelie nymph from the Bone Chandelier, a club in Prague. After Clary Fairchild was able to escape and return to the New York Institute, her brother Jonathan Morgenstern had her use her magic to assume his sister's form. Jonathan, however, was not satisfied with her performance, since Lanaia made mistakes that Clary would never make, such as mispronouncing the name of a famous painter. Deciding to get his hands on the real thing, Jonathan went to New York and shifted into Clary's boyfriend, Jace Herondale, to fool her and spend time with her.

Clary saw right through the trick and almost captured Jonathan, only for the latter to escape. Jonathan returned to the apartment where Lanaia asked him if he wanted to perform again, but he refuses, stating that his encounter with Clary gave him hope that his sister would join him sooner than expected.[1]

When Jonathan was unable to find the Morning Star sword, Lanaia arranged an audience with the Seelie Queen, the last person who might have the sword in her possession. True enough, the Queen indeed possessed the Sword. Lanaia and Jonathan arrived at the Seelie Court where the latter bargained the relinquish of the sword in exchange of killing the Greater Demon, Queen of Edom and Jonathan's adoptive mother, Lilith and delivering her head on a silver platter. Lanaia later watched as Jonathan transported himself to Edom. His attempt on Lilith's life and obtaining the sword, however, was in vain, as Clary teleported Lilith to Earth in order to question her about a rune that binded her life to Jonathan's. Jonathan later arrived for Lilith, incapacitating Jace and another Shadowhunter, but Clary was able to capture and send him to the Institute.[2]

Loyalty to the Seelie Queen[]

Due to the fact that Jonathan was put into the Institute's custody, Lanaia was no longer associated with him. The Seelie Queen entered Lilith's apartment, where she was greeted by Lanaia who informed her that the Institute had sent out all of its soldiers because of some demon attacks terrorizing the mundanes, which turn out to be a diversion set up by her to keep the Institute empty. The Queen then instructs Lanaia to get to Jonathan and kill him in order to prevent him from obtaining the Morning Star sword. Lanaia breaches the Institute's wards and enters Jonathan's cell. Lanaia then attempts to kill the horrified Jonathan, but before she could do so, Clary, now fully succumbed to the rune's influence, suddenly arrives and decapitates Lanaia from behind, killing her and breaking Jonathan out of the Institute.[3] Her corpse was later recovered and taken out by the Seelie Knights.[4]
