Look, I might be a Shadowhunter, but I'm a Downworlder, too. And no one gets to take that away from me.

–Helen, Heavenly Fire

Helen Blackthorn is a half-Seelie, half-Shadowhunter member of the Clave.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Helen was born to a Shadowhunter father and a Seelie mother.[1]

Heavenly Fire[]

At one point, Helen became involved with Project Heavenly Fire with Victor Aldertree. For a long time, she was under the impression that the project was dedicated to the rehabilitation of Downworlder prisoners. With the use of a serum made with heavenly fire extracted from a fragment of the heavenly blade Glorious, they turned a selection of Downworlder prisoners from the Gard into mundanes. Helen took charge over some of the operations in the facility where the experiments were held and coordinated directly with Aldertree.

TMI317 Helen, Simon & Raphael 02

Helen, Simon, and Raphael watch the destruction of the facility's heavenly fire bunker.

A prisoner who went by Zeke Russo arrived at the facility and starting assaulting the guards when they took the vampire Raphael Santiago away. When he was knocked out, Helen saw the Seelie whisper ring on his finger and took it from him. She interrogated him when he woke and when she realized that he knew more than he should and was after heavenly fire, she reported him to Victor.

Shortly after talking to Victor, Isabelle Lightwood was able to reach Helen through the ring she'd confiscated from "Zeke". Helen found out from her that Zeke was in fact her spy, Simon Lewis, and told her about Aldertree's true plans for the heavenly fire: he planned to slip the serum into the water supply to rid the world of Downworlders. Helen was distraught to learn about the role she unknowingly played in his plot and decided to stop him. She went to the holding room where Simon was and, with Raphael, the three of them went to the laboratory where Helen initiated the self-destruct sequence that then destroyed most of the heavenly fire serum. She took out a few vials kept in the room and gave them to Simon, who needed the substance for his best friend, Clary Fairchild.

TMI317 Heline01

Helen meets Aline.

After Aldertree's arrest, Helen met Aline Penhallow, the daughter of Consul Penhallow, in Alicante for the first time. Helen was worried that she would be punished for Project Heavenly Fire, but Aline instead commended her for her role in stopping it. Helen pointed out that she didn't do it because of her Seelie blood, defensive likely because it was an assumption many made about her or one she feared they might, but Aline simply told her that she didn't say as much.[1]

Penhallow[]

The two began seeing each other shortly after they met. While at the Gard one time, Alec Lightwood ran into the pair, implied to have caught them together. When the demon towers surrounding Alicante fell, the three of them rushed into action to prepare everyone for battle. When Isabelle pointed out the luck of them being together at the time, Aline defensively claimed that they had just been "doing research", though they were unable to fool the siblings who both smirked knowingly.[2]

Some time after the siege, Helen was called to the New York Institute due to her expertise in heavenly fire, which was found to be coursing through Isabelle's veins, deducing that it was a result of the shrapnel of heavenly fire-infused blade that hit her. Helen explained to her that, like one of the scientists she worked with who was in a similar situation as hers, she would die if she came into contact with demons and Downworlders too much.[3]

After Jonathan Morgenstern's defeat, Helen attended Alec and Magnus Bane's wedding at the New York Institute with Aline as her date. While dancing after the ceremony, the pair discussed what they would wear if they ever got married in the future — dresses or tuxes for both, and they shared a kiss.[4]
