Céline Herondale was the wife of Stephen Herondale and is the biological mother of Jace.
History[]
Celine's medical records state that she had a history of mental illness—that she exhibited symptoms of psychosis. Luke and some others apparently noticed times when she would speak to herself and see things and people who weren't there; they tried to get her to go to the Silent Brothers but she refused, afraid that she would be declared unfit for duty. These symptoms, they noticed, apparently only subsided when Stephen was around.[1]
Céline desperately wanted a child and tried with Stephen. She once had a child who died, so when she became pregnant again, she was scared that she would lose the child again so she asked Valentine for help to somehow ensure her son's safety. Valentine took advantage of her desperation and took the opportunity to perform his experiments on her unborn son. She received doses of Ithuriel's blood; sure enough, the angel blood made the child strong enough to survive the whole term of her pregnancy.[2]
After Stephen died, Céline coped by keeping his ring close, wearing it around her neck and never took it off.[1] Eventually, nine months into her pregnancy, she apparently committed suicide. Her body was found ravaged by werewolves, their child believed to have been eaten alive. Unbeknownst to them, Valentine took the boy, along with the Herondale family ring from Céline's finger, and raised him as his own.[3]
Because of the circumstances of her death—that she committed suicide—she and Stephen, who in his case was considered a traitor for his part in the Circle, were buried in the Cemetery of the Disgraced, their tombstones next to each other's.[4]
Personality[]
Her mother-in-law Imogen described her as smart, headstrong, and stubborn,[5] backed by Luke calling her an amazing person.[1]
Physical description[]
Céline was said to be blond and very beautiful. Jace is said to look like her around the eyes.[5]
