Bad Blood is the eighth episode of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments.

Synopsis[]

DIFFICULT DECISIONS MUST BE MADE: Alec and Clary are forced to make some hard decisions.

With word of Alec, Jace and Isabelle's "extracurricular activities" with Clary reaching The Clave, a convoy is sent to observe the Lightwoods running the New York Institute. Once The Clave representative arrives, it is very clear how much trouble the Lightwoods are in.

Meanwhile, Clary is faced with a devastating decision.

Plot[]

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Alec and Izzy want to turn the Mortal Cup over to the Clave, while Clary and Jace want to use it to rescue Jocelyn. As a compromise, Alec locks it away in the Institute using his stele. Because of the Lightwoods' tarnished reputation, the Clave sends envoy Lydia Branwell to take temporary command of the Institute.

Lydia shares with Alec about the love of her life being killed on the job, and warns him against forming attachments. She also reveals that Maryse and Robert were both ex-Circle members, to Alec's displeasure. When the Clave reveals its decision to make Lydia's post permanent, Alec proposes to her in order to restore his family's reputation and ensure that it remains in control of the Institute.

Valentine's lackey reports that Clary has the cup, but she is under the protection of both the Institute and the New York werewolf pack. Valentine sends his mindless Forsaken slaves to attack both of these groups, with Alec and Hodge Starkweather repelling the attack on the Institute.

Raphael turns up at the Institute with Simon's corpse, explaining that Camille killed him when he returned to the Hotel DuMort out of a craving for her blood. Clary is given a choice: bury Simon and bring him back as a vampire, or stake him through the heart and kill him for good. Jace warns Clary that emotions cloud judgment, and Luke advises her against bringing Simon back for selfish reasons, but she chooses to do so anyway. At the burial, Camille attempts to dispose of Simon's body, but Raphael points out that killing a Mundane goes against the Accords, and her clan turns on her, making him the new clan head.

Simon is buried and eventually emerges from the ground as a bloodthirsty shadow of his former self. Horrified at what he's become, he shrugs off Clary's attempts to convince him that he's the same Simon she's always known, and flees.
