Asmodeus: "A favor?! After coming into my home and insulting me like this?! What kind of fool do you take me for?"
Magnus Bane: "The kind whose love for his chosen son might outweigh his pride."
―Asmodeus and Magnus, Erchomai

Asmodeus is a Greater Demon and is considered to be the most powerful Prince of Hell.

History

Magnus

At one point, Asmodeus slept with an Indonesian woman, with whom he had a warlock son, Magnus Bane. After the woman's death, Magnus became orphaned and wandered the streets. Asmodeus found him and took him in, teaching him how to properly handle his magic.

After some time, Magnus saw what kind of being Asmodeus truly was and banished him back to Hell, where Asmodeus ruled Edom.[1]

Centuries after,[2] Magnus sent himself to Edom to ask for Asmodeus's help in conjuring up enough power to free a Shadowhunter trapped by Lilith. Asmodeus wasn't inclined to want Lilith back in the realm with him, but when Magnus offered something in exchange, Asmodeus was quick to tell him to stay and rule beside him. Magnus refused and asked him if there was anything else he may have interest in. Asmodeus agreed to give him the power he required in exchange for his own magic, rendering Magnus powerless after saving Jace.[1]

Sometime later, Asmodeus was summoned by Alec Lightwood through a warlock conduit. He let the Greater Demon know that Magnus has been suffering so much due to the loss of his magic and immortality and demanded he give back both of them. Asmodeus agreed, but once again with a price: Alec will have to break up with Magnus. Alec initially disagreed but Asmodeus made it clear that the deal would be off if he said a word to Magnus. Shortly after fulfilling the deal, Asmodeus escaped Edom and went to look for Magnus.[3]

Reuniting with his son, Magnus was surprised to see that he has escaped. Asmodeus stays true to his word and gives Magnus his magic back. Though overjoyed about this, Magnus asked Asmodeus why is he here. Asmodeus states that he was wrong about taking Magnus' magic away and that he wants another chance to be his father. Nevertheless, Magnus refuses and leaves.

When Magnus attempts to erase his memories of Alec, Asmodeus unexpectedly steps in and stops Magnus from doing so, with Magnus demanding that he leave him alone, since Asmodeus never cared about him and never will, which Asmodeus dismisses. He encourages Magnus to fight through his heartache and keep his memories before the latter leans on his father's arms, crying.[4]

Asmodeus later helps Magnus reclaim his apartment, now owned by the current High Warlock of Brooklyn, Lorenzo Rey. Magnus asks for his apartment back, but Lorenzo says no. To his shock, he sees that Magnus has regained his powers and that Asmodeus is no longer in Edom. When Lorenzo threatened to throw them both into the dungeons of the Spiral Labyrinth, Asmodeus fights back by turning the superior warlock into a tiny lizard. Magnus later finds out, through his soon-to-be mother-in-law Maryse Lightwood, the reason why Alec broke up with him and confronted Asmodeus about it. Angered, Asmodeus pressured Magnus into accepting his status as Prince of Hell and he snapped back saying that it was his worst nightmare and, made aware that Asmodeus would always find a way to escape, Magnus instead opens a portal and sends his father to eternal limbo.[5]

Abilities

  • Immortality: As a Greater Demon, Asmodeus's age stretches across eons; he does not age nor will he ever die of natural causes or disease.
  • Demonic magic: Asmodeus's magic is unique and very powerful. He is one of the few demons capable of corrupting the ley lines. When he uses his magic, he leaves behind an energy signature that is recognizable by some demons and is slightly similar to that of Lilith's, both being from Edom.[2]
    • Telekinesis: When he considered Magnus Bane asking for a favor "insulting" he released a wave of telekinetic energy that moved him across the room.
    • Transformation: Asmosdeus turned Lorenzo Rey into a lizard with a simple snap of his fingers.
