Alliance is twenty-first episode of Season 3 and is the first part of the two-hour series finale episode of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments.^[1]

Clary comes up with a plan that will bring Shadowhunters and Downworlders together, as Alec struggles for a way to help Magnus.

The episode is based on City of Heavenly Fire.^[1]
Back-to-back filming for the last two episodes ran from mid-July to August 3, 2018.^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]^[6]^[7]^[8]^[9]
The scene where Isabelle burned with heavenly fire after kissing Simon was supposed to be the cliffhanger of the previous episode, City of Glass, which was the original season finale; the announcement of the show's cancellation prompted the change.^[10]^[11]^[12]
Due to the unforeseen cancellation of the series and the sudden order for two additional, ending episodes after filming proper for the season had already wrapped,^[13] some of the actors had already committed to other projects. This included Alisha Wainwright, who portrays Maia Roberts. Wainwright could only manage to shoot all her scenes for the final episodes in one day. The closing story for Maia was adjusted accordingly; according to the actress, the showrunners shared with her the details of what they would have liked to do with the character if they had more time with her.^[14]^[15] Isaiah Mustafa was also filming It: Chapter Two and was barely present in the finale episodes.
